Mechanics Sweep Home Tri-Meet
The Williamson wrestling team made short work of things on Saturday morning as they defeated Rowan College of Gloucester Count and Rowan University in a Saturday morning home meet. Williamson quickly dispatch of RCGC 44-12 and then won in convincing fashion over Rowan by a score 41-24.
In the opening bout, Liam Kernan got things started with a hard fought 6-2 win at 133 lbs. Other highlights against the Roadrunners included Michael Kling's dominating technical fall at 157 lbs., Louis Milone's pin (1:23) at 197 lbs. and Harry Asensio's pin (2:30) at heavyweight to lead the way for the Mechanics.
The much-anticipated feature bout of the morning pitted Williamson fellow MEC conference foe Rowan University. What was thought could be a battle to the end, ended up being the exact opposite, as Williamson came out fired up and dominated the early action to build an insurmountable and come away with the win.
After forfeiting at 125 lbs., Liam Kernan once again got things rolling for the Mechanics with an impressive pin fall at 133 lbs. at the 3:31 mark. That seemed to set the tone for Williamson over the next several bouts.
Chase Whartnaby followed Kernan's pin with one of his own at the 1:21 mark to put Williamson up at 12-6. Alexander Gamble-Williams then put on a commanding performance at 149 lbs., coming away with a 18-3 first period technical fall to increase the lead for Williamson. Michael Kling then stayed hot with his second win on the day, this time with a pin at the 2:13 mark, to put Williamson up 23-6.
Rowan would take the about at 165 lbs. via pin before Pierce Thompson got a huge pin for the Mechanics at 174 lbs. Last year's NCWA national runner-up Talon Pisarchuk made short work of things at 184 lbs. with a pin in just 1:08, before Jeremy Bony put an exclamation point on things with a 50 second pin at 197 lbs.
The wins move Williamson to 7-2 on the year. Next up, the Mechanics play host to the eight-team 2024 NCWA Mid-East Conference dual championships next Saturday, February 10 at the school's new Wesley Student Center beginning at 9:00 A.M.
