Mechanics Defeat Connecticut State
It wasn't necessary the prettiest of games, but as been said, football isn't a beauty contest. With that in mind, Williamson gutted out a victory over visiting Connecticut State Community College, 20-12.
Things did not start out well for Williamson, as they took the opening kick-off and then fumbled three plays in. Connecticut State recovered and went 44 yards in five plays, capped off by a 27-yard touchdown pass from Connor Schipritt to David Deleon. The two-point conversion attempt failed to keep it at 6-0.
Williamson's next possession went much better, as the Mechanics went 60 yards in 11 plays, with Nazaire Miller tying the game on a 5-ayrd touchdown camper. The extra point attempt was blocked to things stayed at 6-6.
Williamson dominated play in the second quarter, as the scored two more times to go up 20-6 at half. The first score came from Miller again, this time on a 13-yard run. Quarterback Tanner Underwood then found running back Kaleb Glynn in the back of the end zone for a 17-yard TD pass with just 34 seconds left before the break.
The Wildcats picked up some offensive momentum in the third quarter, and the pulled to within eight, as they scored at the 6:03 mark. It was David Deleon on the receiving end again, but this time the pass came from quarterback Tali Gallaher. They missed the two-point attempt again and it remained 20-12.
The fourth quarter proved to be interesting, as both teams had chances, but both team's defenses came up big each time. Williamson's defense stopped one final drive by the Wildcats with 30 seconds left and the Mechanics came away with the win.
Defensively, Williamson was led by several outstanding performances. Joe Kelly got credit for four sacks, to go along with nine tackles. Chris Meiklejohn also had nine tackles, including two for loss, as well as a pass break-up and a hurry. Gabe Walsh, had eight tackles, including 1.5 for loss, while freshmen Logan Peck and Dominick Gallo each had six tackles, with Gallo adding his first sack as a Mechanic. Cornerback Cooper Conroy had two interceptions, while Kesean Chambers, tied with Conroy for the team lead in interceptions, added his third on the year.
On offense, Nasir Bowman led the way with 69 yards on ten carries, while Nazaire Miller added 62 yards rushing and two TDs. Asher Wiser led the receiving corps with two receptions.
The win moves Williamson to 2-2 on the year. They next host the New Jersey Warriors for Homecoming next Saturday, October 14 in what promises to be a great game.
