Mechanics Drop Season Opener in Defensive Battle
After losing 19 seniors to graduation and having 16 new starters in the line-up to start the 2024 season, everyone knew the Williamson football team was going to go through some growing pains. That was apparent in their season opening game, as they fell to the visiting New Jersey Warriors by a score of 7-0 in a defensive battle.
The teams played though a scoreless first quarter that saw both defenses excel. It was not until the 10:41 mark of the second quarter that the Warriors would get on the board for the game's lone score, as quarterback Russell Derector took a fumbled snap and ran it in from two yards out. Kevin Thompson's extra point would close out the scoring for the day.
Williamson struggled to move the ball on offense all afternoon. Jason Fisicaro led the team with 21 yards rushing, while Nasir Simmons led the team with four receptions for 25 yards.
Defensively, there were numerous standouts for the Mechanics. Dominic Gallo led the team with nine tackle and a half a sack. Freshman Ryan Creegan had a huge start to his collegiate career, as he had 8 tackles, including one for loss, and a pressure. David DiCampli also had a monster day, as he had six tackles, one and a half sacks, one pressure and one fumble recovery. Kesean Chambers added six solo tackles, while Kevin Mayoros added five tackles and a forced fumble. Logan Peck also excelled with four tackles, a sack, a fumble recovery and a pressure.
The Mechanics get an expected, as well as an undesired week off next week, as Virginia A&M Prep disbanded as of yesterday. Attempts to find a substitute opponent failed and the team is off until Saturday, September 21 at home against CAPP.
