Football Sends Seniors Out with a Win
On a day when Williamson honored its 12 senior football players, the Mechanic defense made sure those same seniors would close out their careers on a winning note, as they forced seven turnovers and scored on two of them in a 34-8 win over CAPP Football Academy on Saturday.
Williamson took time to thank the twelve seniors and their families for all their hard work and decimation over the years. Though this season didn't turn out the way they had hoped, their 10 wins as a class were the second most for a senior class in the last 15 years.
"Noe of the success we have achieved would have been possible without each one of you," shared Director of Athletics, as part of the school's tribute to the seniors.
The football team then went out and made sure that success would continue.
CAPP got on the board first at the 6:39 mark of the first quarter, when Williamson Seibert connected with Anthony Albanese on a 17-yard touchdown reception. The two-point conversion attempt failed.
Williamson though would answer right back, as they embarked on a 9-play, 59-yard drive that ate up 7:32 on the clock to tie the game on a five-yard touchdown pass from Christian Cerelli to Nathan Barnshaw. Cerelli then connected with Cooper Conroy for the two-point conversion to put Williamson on top, 8-6.
The Mechanics would add to that lead just four minutes later when Ryan Creegan picked up a fumble punt attempt and scampered 11-yards for a touchdown. The two-point attempt failed to make it 14-6.
Cooper Conroy would come up with a huge 34-yard interception return that gave Williamson great field position that they would cash in on via a 1-ayrd run by Shaun Bedwell as time expired to give Williamson a 20-6 halftime lead.
CAPP would score the only points of the third quarter, those coming via a safety, as they sacked Bedwell in the endzone for two points.
Williamson though was undeterred, and Cooper Conroy once again came up big, as he intercepted his third pass of the game and returned it 14 yards for a touchdown to put Williamson up 26-8. Conroy's three interceptions gave him 16 for his career, just one shy of Jack Gibson's school record.
Williamson would then seal the game at the 4:15 mark when Kevin Mayoros, playing both safety and wide receiver in his final game, hauled in a 3-yard touchdown pass from Bedwell to close thigs out at 32-8. Bedwell then found Timothy Zaborsky in the endzone for the two-point conversion to close out the scoring at 34-8
Defensive stars abounded on the day for Williamson. Conroy's three interceptions led the way, and he also added a pass break-up to go with them. Freshman standout Ryan Creegan had eight tackles, a fumble recovery return for a touchdown and an interception as well. Gabe Walsh, playing in his final game and with a high ankle sprain to boot, had five tackles, including one for loss, 2 sacks and a forced fumble. Jesse Rios had five tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and two pass break-ups.
On offense, Bedwell, who was pressed into emergency quarterback duties, had an outstanding game, as he went 8-15 for 106 yards and a touchdown. Nasir Simmons had five catches for 78 yards, while Jason Fisicaro, in his final game in a Mechanic uniform, had 75 yards on the ground.
The offensive line of Matt Howard, Kaseem Cotton, Kyle McGallicher, Keith Belton Thompson and Adam Simmins did a great job of opening running lanes and adding pass protection as well.
"I'm proud of our guys and how they hung in there. We lost a couple more guys during the game today but the guts and determination of this team won out today. It was great to see the guys rally to send the seniors out on a winning note," shared Williamson head coach Dan Drake.
The twelve Williamson senior who were honored prior the game are as follows:
