Defensive Points, Big Plays Doom Football
Facing a list of injured players a mile long, Williamson knew they were in for a tough test against Connecticut State on Saturday. Unfortunately, for Williamson they were also playing against themselves, as they allowed three defensive touchdowns, and also gave up several big offensive plays to the Wildcats in a 40-2 defeat.
Williamson's defense played a strong first quarter, as the Wildcats had the ball for just 2:47 of the quarter. Despite that, Connecticut State got on the board first on a 72-yard interception return for a touchdown at the 6:51 mark. The extra point was no good.
Williamson mounted a drive and had a first down deep in Wildcat territory when running back Jason Fisicaro was tackled and then fumbled, however, the officials said he fumbled before he was down (livestream proved he was indeed down before he fumbled) and Keelon Hubbard returned it 91 yards for a touchdown. The 2-poiint conversion was good and Williamson trailed 14-0.
You hate to say that one play turned the tide of a game, but that play appeared to. Instead of leading 7-6, Williamson found itself down 14-0 and they were never able to recover. Facing the amount of injuries they faced, it was just too big of a mountain for the Mechanics to climb.
The Wildcats added a 51-yard TD pass with 1:51 left in the half to go into half up 20-0. They would add two touchdown passes and an 87-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the game to come away with the win. Williamson's lone score came on a safety on a holding call against the Wildcats in the end zone.
Carson Steinruck ad his best game yet for Williamson on the ground, as he garnered 51 yards on 11 carries. Jason Fisicaro added 35 yards, while Sean Bedwell added 29 hard-earned yards rushing.
Nasir Simmons had 5 receptions for 30 yards and also had a 61-yard interception return. Nathan Barnshaw added three catches for 24 yards.
Defensively, Kevin Mayoros was all over the field, as he had eight tackles, including one for loss and a pass break-up. Derek Burke added six tackles, while Tyler Brauer had a huge game with five tackles, one and a half sacks, a blocked kick and a tackle for loss. David Pownell, Jr. added 5 tackles and a sack.
The Mechanics will somehow try to re-group, as they next ravel to the New Jersey Warriors for a 1:00 P.M. start next Saturday, October 12.
