Alumni Lacrosse Team’s Comeback Falls Just Short
Alumni Lacrosse Team's Comeback Falls Just Short
Trailing by six goals late, alumni rally to pull to within one before dropping 10-8 decision
Despite the weather, Saturday's annual alumni lacrosse game was anything but dreary. The varsity would hold a three-goal advantage at halftime, then build that lead to six goals. A furious rally late by the alumni squad would bring them to within a goal with under two minutes to play before a late goal iced things for the varsity in a 10-8 decision.
Mike Kusner 1W2 gave the alums a 1-0 advantage to start the scoring before Matt Dickenson, Justin Minch (2) and Anthony Zollo score to make it 4-1 for the varsity. Frank Sgro 1W1 and Zollo then traded goals to make it 5-2 at half.
Dickinson added a second goal, while Minch added two more and Zollo added one, to just one for the alumni and the score was 9-3. At that point, most felt like it was over. However, that proved to be far from the case and the alumni came roaring back, as they scored five straight goals in under six minutes play to pull to within 9-8 with just over two minutes left, before Zollo's final goal iced things for the varsity at 10-8. Garry Lazaro 0W9 go things started, followed by Martin Reynoso 2W0, Frank Sgro 1W1 twice to lead the comeback.
"We could not be more thankful for the alumni and their families who took the time to come back and participate in rainy conditions and make the event a wonderful success, shared long-time Williamson director of athletics Dale Plummer. "It means a lot to our players, our coaches and the school."
