Overwatch Gold and Blue Cap Outstanding First Year Seasons with Third Place Conference Finishes
The 2024 Williamson Overwatch Gold and Blue teams each made it to their conference finals, where each lost a hard-fought battle. Both however, capped off outstanding first year seasons with big wins in their consolation matches to allow both teams to finish the season in their place of their conference.
The Overwatch Blue team lost last week in their championship match, but came back strong last night to defeat Thomas Moore University, 4-2 to earn third place in their conference.
The Overwatch Gold team, playing in a higher rated league, made it to their conference finals on Wednesday night, where they faced the University of Cincinnati, a team that defeated them 3-1 during the regular season. The Mechanics quickly found themselves down 2-0 in the best of five match, before they came storming back to tie things up at 2-2 and send the series to a fifth and final game. Sadly, for Williamson, the Bearcats got the better of them in that game to come away with a 3-2 championship victory.
"We battled. Our guys gave it all they had. The never quit and showed great determination but in the end, Cincinnati got a map the really worked to their advantage," shared Williamson head coach Nick Mariani.
The loss sent to Mechanics to a 3rd /4th place match last night against Cleveland State University. That match too was a battle, but in the end, Williamson won a hard-fought contest, 4-3 over the Vikings.
"I'm super proud of both our teams for the way they hung in there and gave it everything they had until the end," shared first year head coach Nick Mariani. "We could have given up after such heartbreaking championship match losses, but we didn't.
"Our guys showed incredible reliance and great teamwork and both teams came out with outstanding finishes to their seasons.
"Their hard work and determination will help us to build the program. This was an incredible start and one that they all will remember, as will I," closed Mariani.
