Wresters Come up Big at the Retriever Duals
The Williamson wrestling took part in the Retriever Duals hosted by the University of Maryland-Baltimore County this past weekend and came away with three wins on the day. Williamson first upended NCAA Division III varsity squad Marymount University 35-24. They followed that up with a 43-12 trouncing of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute before dropping their lone match of the day to NJCAA power Garrett College, 36-23, and then shutting out the hosts, 60-0.
The match against Marymount started slowly for Williamson. Liam Kernan, who went undefeated on the day, got Williamson on the board with a technical fall, 18-3, but two pins and a forfeit later found Williamson down 18-3 at that point. Michael Kling got one of the pins back with a pin of his own, but Williamson gave up another pin to put the match in jeopardy-or so it seemed. Williamson fans had nothing to fear as Talon Pisarchuk (undefeated on the day), Chase Thompson and Vincent Piermatteo all closed out their matches with pins to give Williamson the come-from-behind win.
Williamson's match against RPI was never in doubt, as Kernan (another tech fall) and Chase Whartnaby picked up decisions to get things going. Alexander Gamble-Williams then picked up a pin and Michael Kling added a decision to increase the lead. Talon Pisarchuk and David DiCampli then added pins, while Chase Thompson and Keenan Curley picked up forfeit wins to close things out.
The match against Garrett College was closer than the score would indicate. Williamson had to forfeit 125, before Kernan again was dominant in a 7-0 decision. Sadly, Williamson then dropped pins at 141 and 149 before Gamble-Williamson picked up a pin of his own to draw things closer. Kling then picked up a 18-12 decision before the teams traded pins, with Talon Pisarchuk getting the pin at 184 to keep things close. Williamson then gave up a pin at 197 before Chase Thompson came back with a pin of his own at 235. Sadly for Williamson fans, they dropped the heavyweight decision via pin to clinch things for the Lakers.
The three wins moves Williamson to 4-2 on the year. They will now get a well-earned semester-end break before ramping things up when they return in mid-January.
