Incredible Second Half Effort Leads to Improbable Win
Playing without two key defensive starters, Williamson found themselves in a 2-0 hole at halftime in Friday afternoon's game against The Crown College. It was then that they put together a second half for the ages to come away with a dramatic come-from-behind 4-3 victory over the Royal Crusaders.
Things didn't start out well for Williamson. The teams appeared to be evenly matched, and were, but Crown got on the board first at the 22:59 mark on a nice goal by Jonathan Rose. They then increased their lead to 2-0 at the 13:13 mark, this time on a goal by James Rose. They road that advantage to the break.
Whatever Williamson head coach Peter Glowa said to his team at halftime worked, because Williamson was a different team for the second half. Dylan Beaver broke the ice for Williamson, off an incredible feed from Ricky Lusch, to cut the lead in half at 2-1.
It was then that things got crazy, as the teams would score three goals within 2:04, the last two goals coming just 19 second apart!
Williamson scored to tie things up on a header off by Rob Wagner off a corner kick by Beaver, at the 21:14 mark, only to see Crown come right back to re-gain the lead at 3-2 1:43 later on a Grant Lucas goal. It then took Williamson all of 19 seconds to tie things up again at 3-3, this time on a goal by Harrison Pritt, his third goal in two games.
Williamson would get their first lead of the game with 14:13 left on a direct kick by Jonathan Illing, to give them a 4-3 advantage. Their defense would come up big the rest of the way, helping goalie Dan Andre, making his first collegiate start in goal, gain his first win in net for Williamson. The defense, once again playing without team captain Dan Maroney, was able to shut the Crusaders down over the final 14 minutes. Dylan Burke, Rob Wagner, Ricky Lusch, and James Bryan shut things down when they needed to once again, to move Williamson to 6-4-1 on the year.
"It has been a tough week," shared Williamson head coach Peter Glowa. "We have been hit incredibly hard by injuries. So much so that we had to add one of our managers to the roster and he is now starting for us! Yet, our guys played with such heart today and I am super proud that they never gave up and found a way to win.
"What is great about this team is they are so unselfish that opponents cannot concentrate on stopping one player. You saw that again today, as all four goals were scored by a different player. That says a lot about the togetherness of our team," closed Glowa.
Williamson next gets back in action Sunday at 5:00 P.M. as they host Delaware County Community College in a rare 5:00 P.M. start.
