Overwatch Gold Falls in Championship Final
They say in the world of esports that anything can happen. Eastern University proved that on Thursday night, as they took on undefeated Williamson College of the Trades in the NECC Emergent League Central Atlantic B league finals, a team that had shut them out earlier in the season, and pulled off a major upset to claim the 2023 Fall title.
Not only did Williamson come into the match undefeated, they had not lost a single map the entire season, blanking each of their opponents by an identical 3-0 scores. In addition, one of those shutout wins came over Eastern earlier in the year. Things certainly looked like they were headed for a Williamson championship victory. The Eagles however, had other things in mind.
Williamson jumped out to the early lead in the best of seven final. They did manage to drop their first map of the season, but still held a 2-1 advantage after three maps. That is when the roof caved in. Eastern finished strong and took the final three maps for a 4-2 victory.
"Sadly, it was just not our night," shared Williamson head coach Nick Mariani. "We were off. Give Eastern credit, they played well, but we were off the entire night.
"I hate losing, as do the guys, but nothing can take away form the tremendous season we had. It was a great start for a new program and we are only going to get better.
"Our guys don't ever want to feel like that again. We are already looking to the Spring season. We have bigger things to accomplish and we are going after them."
Despite the loss, Williamson should be in a good position to qualify for next May's NECC national championship tournament. Even so, the team wants a championship and will no doubt we working towards that goal right away.
