In a game between two evenly matched teams, and in a contest that could have gone either way, Central Penn College scored in the final minute to go up by one and hung on for a 48-47 win over Williamson on Tuesday night at the Restall Sports Center.
After a slow start, Williamson was eventually able to jump to a 10-point first half lead. The Knights though kept whittling away at that lead and eventually found themselves with a one-point halftime lead.
During halftime the crowd was blessed by a special presentation from the Neumann University Dance Team.
While never able to pull away in the second half, the Knights were however, able to maintain that lead until Williamson finally gained it back with 7:12 left. It was the Mechanics turn to keep the lead until the Knights tied things up with just 1:22 left.
Central Penn then would take a one-point lead with under a minute and while they then regained the ball, Williamson forced a turnover. With what looked like a possible breakaway situation to put them back up with 18 seconds left, the Mechanics immediately turned the ball right back to the Knights. Fortunately for Williamson, the Knights missed a one-and-one with 12 seconds left, giving the Mechanics one final chance. Unfortunately for Williamson though, their last second shot to win the game fell short and the Knights went home the victors.
Abdoulaye Diallo led Williamson with 11 points and 8 rebounds. Rob Whiley added eight points and nine rebounds and Liam Rardin added 14 rebounds.
The loss drops Williamson to 7-13 on the year. They travel to Virginia this weekend to take on Patrick Henry on Friday night and Christendom College on Saturday afternoon.
