Mechanics Top Bucks in a Nail biter
Coming off a tough loss the previous night and being down two starters didn't seem to faze the Williamson basketball team, as they bounced back on Wednesday night to top Eastern States Athletic Conference opponent Bucks County Community College in a tight game by the score of 71-66.
It is often said that athletes have to have short memories in order to shake things off an be successful. Williamson seemed to do just that against Bucks. The night before they let up the first eight points of the game in their loss to Penn State Lehigh Valley. Tonight, they turned the tables, as they scored the first seven points to start things off. Bucks then reeled off eight straight and the back and forth contest was on.
The teams went back and forth throughout the first half before Williamson managed to go on a 7-0 run with the score tied at 32 with 1:12 to play in the half to take a 39-32 lead into the break.
Williamson would stretch its lead to 10 points at 42-32 at the 18:41 mark before Bucks started to chip away. Williamson was able to keep the Centurions at bay until they finally grabbed their first lead of the second half with 5:39 leftk. Anyone who thought Williamson would collapse at that point could not have been more wrong.
There would be three lead changes in the next four minutes until Ronald Johnson's shot 49 seconds left put Williamson up for good at 67-65. Liam Rardin's two key free throws with 6.9 second left iced the game and gave Williamson their second win in their last three contests.
The Mechanics had a balanced scoring attack on the night, led by a trio of freshman and one senior. Freshmen Ronald Johnson led the way with 18 points, while fellow freshman Liam Rardin added 16 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Corby Bennett added 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while freshman Abdoulaye Diallo added 13 points, 13 rebounds and three assists.
The Mechanics defense held Bucks to just 35% shooting from the floor and forced 12 turnovers. They also outrebounded their opponent by five on the night.
After playing seven games in a week and a half, the Mechanics now get a well-deserved rest before getting back into action on November 30 at home against DCCC.
