Mechanics Win for Second Time in Less Than a Day
After winning their game against The Crown College last night, one might expect that Williamson basketball team would show some rust in their game Saturday afternoon against Patrick Henry College, and for a while they did just that. While it took them a while to get going, they were indeed able to shake that rust off in the second half and pull away from visiti9ng Patrick Henry College for a 66-51 triumph.
After starting slowly, the Mechanics were able to build a ten-point halftime lead at 33-23. The Sentinels were able to put together a run to pull to within six at 36-30 with 16:15 left in the game. That is when the Mechanics started to assert themselves and eventually pull away for good.
Williamson would go on a 10-2 run to go up 46-32 and would eventually stretch the lead to as many as 19 points before settling for the 15-point margin of victory. Defensively, Williamson was outstanding, as they held Patrick Henry to just 36% shooting from the floor, while forcing 15 turnovers, getting 10 steals and blocking six shots.
Rob Whiley led the way for Williamson, as he went 7-11 from the floor and scored 18 points for the game. He also added six rebounds and had three steals. Semaj Chery added 13 points, five rebounds and four blocks. Corby Bennett chipped in with 10 points, five rebounds and two assists.
Williamson has a key conference game on Tuesday night, as they host Manor College at 7:00 P.M. The Mechanics lost to the Blue Jays 78-45 earlier in the year.
