Game 2
Penn State Hazleton
Freshman Daniel Gross pitched six strong innings, and Williamson's offense rallied to down Penn State Hazelton 9-4 to take the second game of Saturday's doubleheader in Media, PA.
As in the first game, Williamson found themselves down early to the visiting Lions. Whereas in the opener, their rally was not quite enough to secure the win, this time Williamson's offense, combined with pitching that only got better as the game advanced, was more than enough to give them the win.
The visitors jumped on Gross early, using a three-run home run in the opening frame to go up 3-1. Williamson would eventually tie things at 3-3 in the bottom of the second inning, only to see the Lions go back up 4-3 in the top of the third. That would be their last lead of the game.
Sam Coppa and Pat Jones go thing started in the bottom of the third with RBI singles, before Joshua Illing added a 2-run RBI double to put Williamson up 7-4. Coppa would add another RBI single and Jacob Naumann would add an RBI single as well in the fourth, and another in the fifth, to allow the Mechanics to pull away.
While the Williamson offense was doing its thing, the Williamson defense was also stepping up, as they turned three double plays to help back up the stellar pitching by Gross, who picked up his first collegiate win. Fellow freshman Hagan Nagle pitched a scoreless final inning, as Williamson came away with a split on the day.
The Mechanics are off until Wednesday when the travel to Atlantic Cape for a single game at 3:30 P.M, weather permitting.
