Varsity Uses Big Second Half to Take Down Alumni
No lead is ever safe in the annual Williamson Alumni lacrosse game-and this year proved that point yet again. The alumni team led three times in the first half before the varsity scored three goals in the first five minutes of the second half to help them come away with the 9-4 victory.
Early in the game it was the Josh Kirkpatrick 2W4 vs. Anthony Zollo show. Kirkpatrick got the alums on the board first, at the 18:47 mark, only to have Zollo tie it up at the 14:39 mark. Kirkpatrick then took the lead back for the alumni team at the 11:42 mark, only to have Zollo tie it once again with 6:21 to go. Martin Reynoso 2W0 then put the alums up again, this time at 3-2, before Zollo scored his third goal to tie things at 3-3 heading into halftime.
The varsity team took control of things to start the second half, as they scored three goals in a 5:01 span. Zollo got his fourth goal at the 19:27 mark followed by a goal by Chace Staley at the 15:49 mark. TayShaun Bennett then added a goal at the 14:59 mark to put the varsity up 6-3.
Kirkpatrick would answer back for the alumni at the 13:00 mark, but two more goals by Staley and a goal by Hayden McGinnis iced things for the varsity.
"It isn't easy to just pick up a lacrosse stick and go out there any play like those alums did today. I give them all the credit in the world for doing so. We are so thankful for them coming out today and making the event as special as they did," shared Williamson Director of Athletics Dale Plummer.
"One alum told me after the game that he will need 364 days to recover from the game but he will be back here next year to play in it again. He had a blast!"
