Big Day as Lacrosse Sweeps Two
Sunday afternoon proved to be a big day for the Williamson lacrosse team, as they won a pair of NCLL games on the day, first knocking off Rowan University 5-4 in overtime, before also taking down Millersville University 6-3 to go undefeated on the afternoon.
Pulling out a win in the opener against Rowan looked to be very much in doubt before a late regulation comeback and a sudden death goal less than a minute into overtime gave them the win.
Williamson found themselves down 2-0 early on to the Profs before a goal by Cooper Conroy with 37 seconds to go before half pulled the Mechanics to within 2-1.
Williamson came out in the second half with much more energy and it paid off, as they were able to tie the game a little bit more than a minute into the half on Conroy's second goal, off an assist from Haden McGinnis. They then would grab their first lead of the game at the 11:55 mark on an unassisted goal by Rob Wagner.
Rowan then would score with just 3:43 left to go back up on top in the contest, and looked primed for a win as they tried to run out the clock. Williamson though had other ideas, as once again Cooper Conroy was able to gain possession and fired home a game tying goal with just 43 seconds left in regulation to send it to overtime.
In overtime, Matt Dickinson, who was not at his most accurate in the game up until that point, proved to be totally accurate when the team needed him most, as he fired an incredible game winning shot into the back of the net just 47 seconds into overtime to give Williamson the Liberty Division win.
In their second game of the day, Williamson once again found themselves in a tussle, as they were tied at 2-2 at half against Millersville University. Matt Dickenson and Hayden McGinnis scored the first half goals for the Mechanics.
As was the case in the first game, Williamson came out fired up in the second half, scoring two goals in just t over a minute to go up 4-2. The first goal came from Seamus Bohannon on an assist from Anthony Zollo. The second was from Rob Wagner, with the assist going to Cooper Conroy.
Millersville pulled to within one at 4-3 at the 12:42 mark and appeared to be in a position to do a lot more damage when Williamson gave up a two-minute non-releasable penalty at the 9:00 mark, however the Mechanic defense, which stood tall all afternoon long, was able to thwart the Marauders on several occasions to keep it at 4-3. Goalie Jack Welsh was stellar yet again in goal, as he had 12 saves in the opener and added another seven more in the night cap.
It would remain at 4-3 until Matt Dickinson would score his second goal of the game at the 6:43 mark to put Williamson up 5-3. Williamson would then ice the game at the 3:27, as Hayden McGinnis would score off a nifty feed from Dickinson to put the game out of reach and give Williamson their second win on the day.
The win moves Williamson to 6-3 on the year. They next play at Mercer County College in a 6:00 P.M. start on Wednesday, before returning home for Senior Day next Sunday, April 13 in a 12:00 P.M. start against Drexel University in another NCLL battle.
In the other game of the day, Millersville bested Rowan, 6-3
