Alumni Come out on Top in Annual Alumni Soccer Game

One thing is for certain in the annual Alumni soccer game-the game will be close.  In the previous three games prior to this year, each has been tied at the end regulation and had to be decided on penalty kicks.  This year's game was another close contest however, extra time was not needed to decide the winner in today's contest, as the alumni team came out on top in regulation, 2-1.

The game was about as even as cold be through almost all of the first half until the alums Reynaldo Calvello 0W4 scored a goal, off an assist from Zach Bosak 2W4, with just 47 seconds left in the first half to give the alums a 1-0 lead at the break.

In a tight defensive battle, opportunities for goals were not overly plentiful, so when the alums scored again at the 8:26 mark, this time on an unassisted goal by 3-time All-American Brandon Cairy, it looked like the varsity team was done.  That was not the case however, as leading goal scorer Jonathan Illing scored just shy of two minutes later, off a feed from head coach Peter Glowa, to pull the varsity to within a goal.  Fortunately for the alumni team they had Ryan Haines in goal, which proved to be a smart move again this year, as he was able to keep the varsity off the board the rest of the way to secure the win for the alumni team.

"It was a beautiful game for soccer and it was a fun time for the alums and out varsity players," share longtime Director of Athletics Dale Plummer.

"It was fun to see so many alums come back and participate and it was great to see the coaches play all kinds of different line-ups for the varsity.  It truly was a great day and we could not be more thankful to the alums and varsity players and coaches who made it happen."

(On a side note, thankfully no one mentioned the fact that Masonry Shop Director and class of 0W7 player Pete Zwolak missed two point blanks shots that surely would have iced the game and was awarded a special "blue" card from the referee for doing so!  LOL)
